Vineyards

The climate arround Inks Lake is great for growing grapes. Several local vineyards offer tours, gourmet meals, and even grape stomping.

I’m not sure I have seen a Fordson before. I have heard the name before but I can’t really recall. This model is on display just inside a ranch access gate next to a hillside vineyard.

A Northern California vineyard also runs a winery, coffee shop and antique store. I am not a wine drinker but I’m down with coffee and antiques. I think the lady said the vineyard has been in the family has been in the family for about 150 years. By my calculation that would be 1875. My ancestors came to California’s gold fields about 1860 so I suppose that sounds about right. The railroad reached California about 1868-1869 so it sounds about right for a man from Italy, Mr. Testa, to reach California and buy a small farm in Mendocino County. Given that time line this is a relatively new truck.

Mendocino County with its long and deep central valleys was a little late to the party. The Napa Valley in Sonoma County was possibly the first Northern California County to participate in the growing of wine grapes. Table grapes were grown in many places in California especially in California’s warm and sunny Central Valley. As California viticulture matured and growers became more sophisticated they realized that California’s many different soils and micro climates offered opportunities to grow many varietals. Today wine grapes are grown widely in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, in Coastal valleys from Santa Barbara to Northern Mendocino County as well as in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys. There are also vineyards in Oregon and Washington State and a few in Canada. This is Old River Road along the Russian River southeast of Ukiah, California.

I was looking for landscapes to photograph, particularly valley oaks on hillsides. However, this sign was the first thing that caught my attention as I made my way down the rural road. As you can see there are plenty of oak trees along this road.

Our first port of call along the Moselle, as it were, was Bernkastel-Kues in the Rhineland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate) region. I should say the Mosel, since as soon as we had crossed into Germany, the River too had undergone an alteration in spelling. Our stop had twin cities across the river -- Kues, the more modern city, the shore on which we were moored, and Bernkastel, the old city, dominated by slopes of Reisling grapes on the hills and the Burg Landshut on the high hill above, the ruins of the medieval castle that had guarded the town.

It was still early morning, but one of the nice things about a riverboat is one can just walk off the gangway and on shore without delay. The dawn mists were still billowing down the hills as I strolled along the Kues riverbank getting a look a Bernkastel across the way. I wasn't entirely alone, either: a vast flock of ducks carpeted the shore, looking across the river just like me.
